Better Season Privacy Policy
About Better Season
Better Season is an NBA regular-season comparison game. You can play the entire game without creating an account, and Better Season never asks for your name, email address, or phone number in order to play.
Data that stays on your device
Most of what Better Season stores never leaves your phone. It is written to your device's local app storage and is not sent to us. This includes:
- your Career and Scouting Report record
- local gameplay progress, including your best Streak
- your Daily Five progress so an unfinished day can be resumed
- recent Streak matchup history, used to avoid repeating matchups
- your appearance preference (System, Light, or Dark)
The basketball and statistical data the game uses is bundled with the app. Better Season does not fetch statistics at runtime.
Community Rankings (optional)
Community Rankings are optional and off until you turn them on. Better Season asks you once, and you can change your answer at any time on the Home screen. Declining does not affect gameplay in any way: Streak, Daily Five, Blind Five, HOW?, your Scouting Report, and the Season Archive all work exactly the same either way.
If you turn Community Rankings on, Better Season sends the following to our ranking service:
- a random ID for this installation, created on your device the first time you join
- the relevant Streak and/or Daily Five result being ranked
- app and scoring-model version information used by the ranking system
This ID is not an account. It does not contain your name, email, or phone number, and it is not a device identifier assigned by Apple or your phone — it is a random value generated by the app. It is, however, persistent: it stays the same across sessions on this installation, which means the ranking submissions sent from your installation are linkable to one another. We do not describe it as anonymous, because it lets us associate your submissions with each other over time even though it is not tied to your real-world identity.
We use it to:
- calculate and return your community ranking and percentile information
- keep that installation's ranking submissions associated over time, so a new result updates your existing entry instead of creating a duplicate
- maintain ranking-data integrity and version compatibility
If you turn Community Rankings off, no installation identifier is created, and no ranking data is sent or requested.
Third parties
Community Ranking data is stored and processed by Supabase, which provides the backend database and ranking functions for Better Season. Better Season requires service providers that access Community Ranking data to protect it consistently with this policy and with applicable privacy requirements. As with any internet request, Supabase's infrastructure may process ordinary connection information such as an IP address in the course of handling the request; that handling is governed by Supabase's own practices rather than by Better Season.
Better Season does not include advertising SDKs or third-party analytics SDKs. We do not use the advertising identifier (IDFA), do not track you across other companies' apps or websites, do not sell user data, and do not share data with data brokers. The app does not request protected iOS permissions such as camera, microphone, location, contacts, photos, or notifications.
Keeping and deleting your data
Data stored on your device can generally be removed by deleting the app, subject to normal operating-system and device-backup behavior.
Community Ranking data is retained for as long as it is needed to provide and maintain the ranking service — unless you request its deletion, or it is no longer needed for that purpose.
Community Ranking submissions are different. They are stored on our backend and keyed to the installation identifier. Deleting the app removes that identifier from your device, but it does not automatically delete the records already stored on our backend. Turning Community Rankings off stops future collection and submission, but does not automatically erase data already submitted.
To have your Community Ranking data deleted, use Request Ranking Data Deletion on the Home screen, which opens an email to us that includes your installation identifier so we can find the right record. You can also email us directly at betterseasonapp@gmail.com. Deletion is handled manually by a person, so it is not instantaneous; if you email us without an installation identifier, we may not be able to identify which records are yours.
Changes to this policy
This policy may change as Better Season changes. When it does, the effective date above is updated, and the current version is always available at this address.
